In 1933 John Lomax persuaded the Library of Congress to sponsor a tour whose object would be to record ‘an accurate picture of the workaday Negro.’ The idea of visiting prisons was a stroke of geniusand in 1933, the Lomaxes fetched up at Angola Prison. Leadbelly immediately impressed and he cut 11 tracks including 3 versions of Irene. Those cuts are now virtually unlistenable. Almost exactly a year later Leadbelly re-recorded most of 1933’s material on superior equipment. We open with Western Cowboy from the second Angola date. Not a blues but a ‘cowboy’ piece with all the pulsing drive that Leadbelly must have learned in live performance. Also evident is the wonderful 12-string resonance his instrument can produce. We proceed through Blind Lemon Blues, Midnight Special , I’m Sorry Mama, to Bourgeois Blues, which demonstrate all of Leadbelly’s attributes - his skill on the guitar, his telling way with a lyric and his inventiveness.
