Since their inception in 2009, the Alexander Nettelbeck Triohave captivated audiences with their energetic and eclectic style of jazz. Here Today is the latest release and second album from the Melbourne-based ensemble, comprising composer and pianist Alexander Nettelbeck, bassist Jonathon Zion, and drummer Simone White.
A melding of disciplines from avant garde and classical to funk and jungle, the Trio and their music breathe with the unity of a single body, highlighting the inexplicable connection between human and sound, musician and expression.
The ensemble use their diverse musical experiences to collaborate aural indulgences with sounds spanning from ambient acid to more conventional crushed chords, walking bass and syncopated cymbal of trad jazz styles.
Individually they have toured the world extensively. Together, they’ve performed at notable venues in Melbourne, Australia – a city renowned for its vibrant live music scene – including Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, the Paris Cat Jazz Club, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club.
In December 2010 the Trio released The Alexander Nettelbeck Trio with MGM Distribution. Recorded live in Melbourne, the CD featured compositions by each member of the Trio and received international recognition in Australia USA, Asia and Europe.
Following this international success, the Trio was invited to Italy to play in jazz festivals and participate in masterclasses throughout 2011 and 2012. These included WARSAW SUMMER JAZZ DAYS Warsaw, Poland, FESTIVAL PIWNICA POD BARANAMI, Krakow, Poland, TUSCIA IN JAZZ Soriano Nel Cimino, Italy, BOLSENA , CONZANO, MONTEFIASCONE, Italy, TUSCIA IN JAZZ FESTIVAL, Bagnoregio, Lazzaro Ciccolella and Alexander Nettelbeck STUDIO PROJECT AND CONCERT, at TERZA FASE FESTIVAL, Molfetta, Italy. For scheduling reasons the entire Trio was not able to travel to all events and Alexander Nettelbeck travelled solo to may of these events collaborating with locally based musicians and arts organisations. These collaborations provided impetus for new compositions which feature on the new album Here Today.
Recorded with sound engineer Julian McKenzie at Newmarket Studios, North Melbourne, and mastered at Benchmark Mastering, one of the most established and highly regarded mastering facilities in Australia, this album reflects the diverse experience each member of the group brings to the recording process. Maintaining their collective flow as collaborators, the Trio interprets and improvises to transform the music in this set of original compositions.
The recording is technically simple in a straight out Trio setting; elements of jazz, classical music, hip hop, funk, R&B and drum n bass come out to play in moments which can be calm and reflective in between hard driving grooves and rhythmic interplay.

“ Brilliant, individually and collectively.”
- Ann Creber, Radio 3MDR
”It was jazz, but not always. Funk, but only sometimes. Salsa, for a little bit. Soul, in small sections…. Full of life, energetic and undeniably talented... A wonderful fusion of sound and feeling.”
- Sandi Tighello, Onya Magazine
"This basis of sounds, percussion and sound effects has created a "carpet" on which the piano could improvise, dance and play with all its potential."
- Daniele Pio Caldarola.
