This is a tribute album to his legendary father Josh White, with whom he began his professional career at New York’s Caf%uFFFD Society in 1944. [Note the pioneering `Firsts’ of his father:  Josh White introduced the world to the Negro songbook of folk, blues and spirituals; was the first black male artist to have a million selling record (“One Meatball”); and while also starring in film, radio, concert hall, nightclubs and theater, he became the first Black artist to break the racial color barriers in America’s performance venue, the first Black pop singer to star in a dramatic Broadway play, and the first blues artist to tour internationally.  Of key importance: As Josh White was the closest Black confident to President Franklin Roosevelt:, he became the first Black artist to give a White House Command performance and he was a major influence in the eventual desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. In the UK, where he lived, recorded and toured from 1950 – 1955, he was the first and only foreign artist ever presented by BBC-Radio with a sixty minute Radio Concert Special broadcast  simultaneously on all three BBC channels (1950). He also hosted his own BBC radio show in the early `50s, and his own television music series in the early `60s on the Granada network].   The music on this tribute album pays homage to his father’s early career as a blues, social protest and spiritual recording star during the years 1928 to 1944, and includes the classics: “House of The Rising Sun,” “I Believe I’ll Make A Change,” “Betty and Dupree’s Blues,” “Blood Red River Blues,” “Gonna Live the Life,” “Blind Man,” “Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed,” “Hard Time Blues,” “Southern Exposure,” and “Strange Fruit.” The album closes with a January, 1945 Armed Forces Radio concert featuring Josh White, Jr. and Josh White, backed-up by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, performing Josh’s hit, “One Meatball” (the first million-selling record by a black man in America). Big City Blues Magazine’s review of the CD closed with, “This disc warrants awards, rave reviews, and all the attention possible! Solid folk/blues, nothing short of magnificent!”   No other artist is more capable to perform the unique Josh White vocal and guitar techniques than Josh White, Jr.   Not only did he tour and record with his father for seventeen years, he also earned a 1987 Grammy Nomination on his first tribute album to his father, “JAZZ, BALLADS & BLUES".
