In 2012 a long-standing love of American music from the 1950s and 60s led Heath Cullen from his home in rural South Eastern New South Wales to the USA, on a pilgrimage through the musical holy land of the American south; collecting stories and sounds with which to build his proverbial “difficult second album”. Along the way he also befriended legendary drummer Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams & numerous others), guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss), and bassist Larry “The Mole” Taylor (Canned Heat, and longtime Tom Waits collaborator). Cullen and this seasoned ensemble set to work in an LA recording studio in the summer of 2012, recording live through the finest of analogue equipment, and capturing the rare magic of four [now firm] friends playing together in one room. The resulting work The Still And The Steep, is a joyous, playful, and sometimes dangerous celebration. “The unhurried, spacious musical landscape and Cullen’s knack or conjuring intrigue with words makes for mesmerising listening from beginning to end.” - Martin Jones, Rhythms Magazine
