Love Your Crooked Neighbour With Your Crooked Heart is the beguiling new full-length from one of this country’s most admired songwriters, Charles Jenkins and his band The Zhivagos. The follow-up to his acclaimed 2010 release Walk This Ocean, it was recorded at home in between the volleys of surrounding suburban nail guns, and contains ringing performances of songs with drama, social commentary, tension, warmth and beauty.

A distinct country flavour flows through the record - there are pianos, horns (from Charles son Henry and his mates in The Cactus Channel), and Suzannah Espie and Douglas Lee Robertson (Icecream Hands) singing up a backing vocal storm on a few others. It’s a stunning, rambling ride down a road less travelled and The Zhivagos are at the heights of their collective and considerable powers.

From Charles himself- “Back here in suburban Melbourne at the drummer’s house, with traffic roaring by out the front... we set out to make a quiet album. Rehearsing the songs by day and recording as the night got a bit quieter. Davey Lane brought out his new ukulele, drummer Dave Milne packed up his toms, picked up his brushes and off we went, adding further shape to these county-folk songs.

It’s a little town for me, part black and white, part technicolour. I see Peckinpah in some and Ealing studios in others. Part Spike Milligan’s ‘Puckoon’, part Lawson’s ‘The Union buries its dead’. And on the jukebox, Richard and Linda Thompson, Suzannah Espie and Van Walker, Kirsty and Ewan MacColl, and of course George Jones.”
