Sam Buckingham

Sam Buckingham started writing songs at the age of 14, when given a hand me down guitar for Christmas. Putting music to the poetry she'd been writing through adolescence, it was a way to make sense of the world around her,and Buckingham started using songwriting as a way to express what couldn't always be said in conversation – sixteen years later, that still stands.
Over eight years, five releases and countless tours, Buckingham has developed into an international troubadour,
poetic lyricist and rare diamond in a world of throwaway hooks and meaningless words. With lyrics and
storytelling staying at the heart of each song, Buckingham takes you on a journey of self, processing the world around and inside her, and constantly seeking new clarity and truth.

“So beautifully direct and emotional” Dom Alessio – Triple J

Buckingham has been awarded Finalist with Honourable Mention in the International Songwriting Competition
for four consecutive entries, has graced the stage at some of Australia's premier festivals such as Peats Ridge, Blue Mountains, Nannup & National Folk Festival, and has played alongside some of Australia’s most loved artists including Washington, Matt Corby, Katie Noonan, Lior, Kasey Chambers, iOTA and Angus & Julia Stone.
Equally at home on large stages and small, Buckingham has embarked on five national House Concert Tours in
the past three years. These unique and intimate tours have seen her play in more than 100 homes of fans, and
become one of the first Australian artists to pioneer the House Concert touring model.
“Buckingham filled the stage with her presence alone, a feat that even the most accomplished solo artists still
struggle with” Shout Out Music.
2012 saw the release of her acclaimed EP ‘Fragile Heart’, debuting at #3 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts.
A co production effort with multiple ARIA-winner Paul McKercher, recording Fragile Heart lead to a worldwide
publishing deal with Albert's, home of Gotye, Josh Pyke & Ellie Goulding. Signing with Albert's put her on the
road to Nashville and New York, honing her songwriting talents and working in the world’s biggest music market
before going on to showcase at the infamous International Folk Alliance, held in Toronto early 2013.
‘Fragile Heart’ served as a delicious teaser to Buckingham’s 2013 released long player ‘I’m A Bird’. From the lead
single “Follow You” to “Leave this Town” and the raw and honest delivery of the album’s title track, ‘I’m A Bird’
carries the continuing theme of travel and discovery, the constant trademark of a searching soul, and the hallmarks of one constantly asking questions.
Adventure and warmth flow throughout this remarkable set, again co-produced with Paul McKercher, breaking
the expected female singer/songwriter mould with unparalleled ease.
“Her songwriting and astounding voice gripped me, definitely one to follow” Timber & Steel.

The release of 'I’m A Bird' saw an extensive run of house concerts around Australia, with public gigs dotted
around the country as Buckingham clocked up miles showcasing, in solo mode, the new album from start to
finish. Funded in part by a successful crowd funding campaign, where Buckingham raised over $10,000 to record
and release the album, the grassroots and fan-focused approach continues to drive and deliver for Buckingham,
who is now using US based platform Patreon to deliver new song demos directly to fans as they're written.
Since 'I'm A Bird' first took flight, Buckingham has again lapped the country twice, co headlining first with
Australian troubadour Buffalo Tales (aka Wes Carr), and Canadian songsmith Benjamin James Caldwell on her
most recent 'Shackles' tour. As soon as the tour ended, Buckingham returned once again to New York City to
collaborate with some of America's most celebrated writers (Andy Marvel, Marc Copely, Mary Lee Kortes) and
moved on to travel throughout Latin America, where she currently resides.
It's normal to want to label an artist, throw them into a genre and know what to expect from a song, album or
performance. But Buckingham isn't into meeting expectations. Writing as she feels, collecting thoughts and stories and weaving them into poetry that swims in and out of melodies like a bellbird building a nest; Sam Buckingham will enchant and engulf you, opening your mind and warming your heart.
